Best Practices for Packaging and Shipping Fragile Glass Products

Fulfilling glass orders is definitely nerve-wracking. It takes balance, care, and precision to protect delicate items like wine bottles, glassware, and more.

Unfortunately, almost anything can spell disaster for fragile goodsโ€”a bumpy ride in the delivery truck, an accidental drop, or even just using the wrong kind of packaging.

The worst-case scenario is shattered pieces and a disappointed customer. But even minor damage, like scratches, can render a beautiful product unsellable. Thankfully, learning how to ship glass the right way, using the right packaging and techniques, significantly reduces the chance of damage during transit.

Hereโ€™s a breakdown of the best ways to pack your glass items so they can handle the shipping journey and make it to their destination safe and sound.

Clean and Inspect Your Glass Items

Before you even think about packing, inspect your products and thoroughly clean them.

This is very important because any dust, dirt, or fingerprints can scratch the surface when you ship glass, and overlooked cracks or chips could worsen during transit. A close inspection will ensure you spot any existing damage.

For cleaning, wipe each item with a lint-free cloth or glass cleaner to avoid scratching the surface. You could also use a mild soap and water solutionโ€”weโ€™d stay away from harsh chemicals as they can damage the glass.

Once done, dry the glass completely because any remaining moisture can lead to water spots or damage during transit.

Wrap and Protect Each Item Individually

Each piece deserves its own personal bodyguard when you ship glass. This means wrapping each item in a protective layer of bubble wrap, packing paper, or foam pouches to form a buffering layer against bumps and vibrations.

For items with sharp edges or corners, add an extra layer of protection with corner protectors. These prevent chips and cracks by distributing pressure evenly.

An alternative to individual wrapping, if youโ€™re shipping unusually shaped glass items, is to create inserts that cocoon each piece into the box. For example, Gorilla Shippers’ pulp inserts are molded to fit glass bottles perfectly.

These inserts prevent jostling during transit and offer superior shock absorption, minimizing damage even if the box takes a hard hit. They can also be tailored to fit any size or shape, keeping your items snug and secure.

Use the Right Packaging Material

Closeup of corrugated cardboard sheets

When shipping glass, the materials you choose can make or breakโ€”literally, the deliveryโ€™s success. But there are so many options out there, so how do you pick what to ship your glass products in?

First up, youโ€™ll want a sturdy corrugated cardboard box with strong edges. Double-walled boxes are even better for heavy or multiple glass items.

However, not all corrugated boxes are created equal. You need boxes designed specifically for fragile items, like Gorilla Shippersโ€™ patented Hexabox shippers, which have a double-walled, six-sided corrugated design that provides superior strength and durability.

Additionally, invest in specialized corrugated boxes that are certified by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) to ensure they are robust enough to handle real-world transport challenges. Major carriers like FedEx and UPS recognize ISTA certification as the industry standard.

Add Cushioning

Now itโ€™s time to think inside the box! The next line of defense against impact when you ship glass items are your bubble wrap, foam inserts, air cushions, and other types of void fill that absorb shock and prevent movement in the box.

Dividers are a must if youโ€™re shipping multiple products. These act as barriers between individual items, which is crucial because even the slightest bumps or vibrations can cause glass items to chip, crack, or break.

There are several types of dividers for shipping glass items. Cardboard dividers are cost-effective, appropriate for lighter glass items, and can be easily customized to fit different product sizes. Foam and pulp inserts offer better shock absorbency while corrugated plastic dividers are durable and reusable.

Once packed, gently shake the box to check for any internal movement. If you hear or feel anything shifting, reopen the box and add more filler material until everything is firmly in place.

Ensure Your Box Is Securely Sealed

Many companies take this step for granted, but a well-packed box is only as secure as the seal that keeps its contents inside. This is where you need strong packing tape.

Secure your shipping box and reinforce all the seams and edges with heavy-duty tape, applying at least two layers to ensure the box remains sealed and intact throughout the journey.

For added security, use tamper-proof tape to reassure your customers that their package hasnโ€™t been disturbed in transit.

However, some types of boxes, like our Hexabox shippers, do not need to be sealed with tape because they are designed to โ€œlockโ€ into place. With these types of packaging, always follow the manufacturerโ€™s assembly tips and guidelines on how to ship glass meticulously.

Add Safe Handling Labels

A box with a Fragile label

Proper labeling is critical when shipping glass items because it ensures that everyone handling your package understands its delicate nature and treats it with care.

Use โ€œfragileโ€ and โ€œhandle with careโ€ stickers, applying them prominently on multiple sides of the box. These labels should be bright and bold.

Additionally, add arrows to indicate the correct side up, especially for items like glass bottles or fragile glassware that must remain upright.

Finally, include detailed packing slips with item descriptions, quantities, and any special instructions for handling. If youโ€™re using Gorilla Shippersโ€™ patented Hexabox or other specialty packaging, mention it on the slip to inform carriers of the specific designโ€™s protective features.
